Prince George’s County All-Comers Meet

Our inaugural indoor track season got off to a great start.  The trip was long but the results were fruitful, as we took a team of eight to Prince George’s County, Maryland at the PG County Sports and Learning Center.  It was a wonderful experience for the kids, which served as a tune-up for the USATF South Zone Junior Olympic Championships that will be held at UNC-Chapel Hill indoor track.   

The facility itself was magnificent with plenty of seats and concessions to accommodate the crowd of over 2000 participants and spectators.  The meets had participants from ages 4 up to 70+ years.  It was very pleasing to my spirit to see all those people out there participating in the sport of track and field.  The spectators made the atmosphere all the better as they chanted while they watched all the athletes.   

“This is my hometown” said Wendell Davis parent of Wynton Davis who won his section of the 55 meters and placed fifth in the Long Jump in his age group. The complex which lies right next to the Washington Redskins Stadium “was built for this community here in Landover, Maryland”, Davis added.  “Kids come here after school and on the weekends and it gives them something to do.”  The facility has an Olympic sized pool with a kiddie area with water slides, gymnastic center, classrooms, basketball courts and a weight room.  I was at awe in what the government in that town has done for its citizens. 

The Triangle Champion Athletes certainly enjoyed the venue as they ran, jumped and threw extremely well in front of the large crowd. TCTC Section winners were Wynton Davis (55meters), Gregory Hairston (Long Jump), Tierra Holloway (200meters).
